In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered vehicle manufacturers to standardise VIN numbers, so from 1981 all VINs have 17 characters. VIN numbers on bikes made before 1981 can have any number of characters. You can identify the make of the moped by its VIN. Check the moped's frame under the seat for the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Look for the 'Puch' sign imprinted on the fuel tank on the left-handed side of the moped.
